8. Robert Andrew JENKINS Nobody seems to either
know or want to talk about Robert Andrew Jenkins. Shortly before Ruby, his daughter, died, I
asked her to tell me something (anything) about him. Her comment was "Oh, you don't want to
know about him." I insisted that
she tell me something, but she continued to dismiss him as not worth even
thinking about. I asked Dad (O. M.) and
later Eva what they knew about him, and they told almost identical
stories. The little story starts
"during the Depression."
Apparently, Robert had left (divorced?) his wife Pearl many years ago,
and was a wanderer. During the thirties,
he was had been employed at a Seminole Dairy in (Seminole?) Florida, and
apparently lost that job. Jobs being
hard to come by, he returned to Texas and lived with his son, Ozment Milton
Sr., and his wife Mary Lou, and their two children O. M. Jr. and Eva. After a short time (Eva thinks just a few
weeks), Mary Lou asked him to move out, since times were so bad that they were
having trouble just feeding themselves.
I recall as a child being at my
grandparent's house (Mary Lou and Ozment's), and seeing a stack of letters from
Robert, addressed to Mary Lou, his daughter-in-law. Apparently, he continued to correspond with
her, even after she kicked him out. I
asked Mima who had written these letters, and she told me who he was. As I recall some probably 40-45 years later,
the letters were routine, like descriptions of the weather, how he was feeling,
and where he was at the time. I suppose
the letters, which were in a buffet drawer in the hallway by the bathroom, have
since been destroyed. I don't know where
he went or where or when he died.
I looked at a microfilm of the 1900
census in an effort to find out more about him, like was he born in
Palestine? When was he born? Knowing that his oldest son, Ozment Milton,
was born in 1891, I figured him to be born 1860-1870, but he wasn't included in
the Anderson County census for 1880. The
1890 census burned according to a library worker in Palestine (I guess when the
Anderson County Courthouse burned about 1910).
The 1900 census included Robert's wife Pearl and first four children (J.
W. wasn't born until 1901), but it didn't include Robert. Pearl and the four kids apparently lived with
her parents, the Ozments, since the Jenkins family immediately followed the
Ozments on the census. The census
indicated the place of residence was Main St., Palestine.
The census indicates that the kids'
father (Robert) was born in Tennessee.
That could be right, but the census taker didn't seem to take much care
with facts. He spelled the Ozment
surname Ozmont, the Jenkins surname Jinkins, and listed James Wisdom Ozment's
father's birthplace as France, while many other records state that Varnum
Ozment was born in North Carolina.
Anyway, the census taker listed the kids' father's birthplace as
Tennessee, which was (coincidentally?) their grandfather's (J. W. Ozment)
birthplace. [Addendum 9/30/03 - I just looked at the 1930 census, and while I
couldn't find Robert, his son Ozment Jenkins (my grandfather) and Ozment's
family Mary Lou, O. M. and Eva, and Jim Henry Taylor, Mary Lou's son by
previous marriage were listed. Mary Lou
listed her father's birthplace as Tennessee, which corresponds to other
records. Ozment listed his father's
birthplace as Texas, but this now appears to be wrong - see 10/10/03 note
below]
Interesting note - according to the
1900 census, the first three kids were born in Texas (Palestine?), but fourth,
Ruby, was born in Louisiana in 1899.
Since they are back in Palestine in 1900 for the census, but without
Robert, did he stay in Louisiana?
Apparently not forever, since J. W. was born in 1901.
I looked for Robert on the 1910 census,
but again he wasn't listed. His wife and
now five kids are listed, but not Robert.
The 1910 census looked just like the 1900 census, with the exception
that it now included J. W. It still
shows the kids' father's birthplace as Tennessee. I guess I'll have to check Tennessee records
to try to find out who Robert Andrew Jenkins was.
Pearl and her now 5 kids were
apparently still living with the Ozments on Main St. in 1910, since they are
listed right after the Ozments. Mr.
Ozment was the owner of the phone company, and the offices of the the phone
company at that time (I've been told) were on Main St., upstairs above
"Little Brattons," I believe.
I wonder if they lived where he also worked? pj 5/24/99
10/10/03 I just found Robert on the
1870 census of Jasper, Marion Co, Tenn.
I feel certain that this is Ozment's father. I know Ozment's father was named Robert. This census list Robert, aged 5 (born abt.
1865?) and age 5, and whose father's name was Andrew; the census showed Andrew as 30 years old in
1870, thus born in 1840? Census shows
Ala. as Andrew's birthstate. He was born
in 1865 at Jasper, Marion County, Tennessee.
He married Pearl OZMENT, daughter of James Wisdom OZMENT and Eva Lucinda
MARTIN, on 26 Jun 1890. He died after
1930.
