S. Jinkins, who lives out on Tascosa Road, isn't even consideringretirement.      At 77, he has a soft spot in his heart for farmers, says heunderstands their problems and enjoys working with them.      He should.  He has managed the Kellogg Grain Co. at Soncy Road since1930., watching wheat prices fluctuate from 25 cents a bushel to as highas $3 as bushel.      Jinkins was born in Motley County and came to Amarillo in 1930.  Heworked on the Bush Estate for several months and then went to work at theelevator as bookkeeper.      Four weeks later he became manager.  That was during the early yearsof the depression.      'I remember one year I ran the whole elevator on $400 including myown wages,' he said.      Matter of fact, his wages in those early years came to about $1.50 aday.  ' And I was glad to get it.'      The elevator business was seasonal so Jinkins did several otherthings to make a living.  He taught school a bit and kept books here andthere.      And in 1937, he operated a filling station on the side.  It was outon the highway, near the helium plant, and it gave him one of the twoworst scares of his life.      One day, he was putting gasoline into a car and just as he finished, one of the three occupants of the car stepped up beside him and pressed agun to his side.      Putting him in the car, they drove west to within about a mile ofBushland.  Meanwhile, it became obvious they were going to rob him.  Byway of diverting their attention, he kept suggesting they drive back tothe filling station where there was more money in the cash register.      I was afraid they'd shoot me and leave me by the road,' he said.      But they paid no attention to his suggestion.  Instead, they tookthe cash he had on him, let him out of the car and pointed the gun at him.      'You run, and don't you look back,' one of them said.      He ran.      'They got about $17, which was quite a bit in those days,' saysJinkins.  ' I think I had about $60 in the cash register.'      At any rate, it shook him up sufficiently and, as a result, herequested to be made a deputy sheriff.  He was appointed and served acouple of years.      There was an incident during that period which put him a little onedge.  A man called to say that some fellows were stealing oil, in drums, from his golf course near the helium plant and were on the place at thattime.      Jinkins drove to the course, flushed the fellows out from behind abunch of oil drums and held them at gunpoint until the sheriff arrived.'      'Trouble was, my gun wasn't loaded,' said Jinkins.  'My son had usedall the shells the day before, and I knew it, ' said Jinkins. 'But theydidn't.'      The elevator was his main business, however, and he loved the wheatseason.      'There wasn't any such thing as a moisture tester at that time,' hesaid.      Instead, he tested the grain with his teeth.  'If it cracked, it wasdry enough.'      And with a good head for figures, he operated for many years withoutan adding machine.  During the leanest years, he operated the elevatoralone, working the grain in the daytime, the books at night.      'Lots of nights I worked until midnight,' he said.  'For one thing, during the dry years, at two bushels to the acre, it took all day for afarmer to get a load.  So they came in late.'      At that time, the elevator capacity was 1 1/2 million pounds, andthe scale was a 30,000 pounder.  Today the elevator capacity is 22million pounds, and the scale weighs 100,000 pounds.      The second frightening incident nearly took Jinkins' life.  In 1962,while butane gas was being installed in the office building, an explosionoccurred.      Jinkins, blown to the front door, could barely see well enough tofind the doorknob and open the door.,      'Another few second and my eyeballs would have gone,' he said.      He was laid up, badly burned for quite a while and thought he had'retired'.  But a couple of years ago he took over the elevatormanagement again, obviously glad to be back with the grain, the figures, and most of all, the farmers.      'I don't ever intend to quit as long as I'm able to go.' he said.'You need to be around people.' Jinkins was born Sept. the 24th, 1865.  This for you       Your Mother done for her 7th Son in 1885.'      Pat provided for his growing family by teaching school andsupplemented the family income by farming the land he had filed on notlong after arriving.  He was one of the earliest teachers in the countyand was the first teacher of the Clements School.  Earlier he taught atWhite Star.      Mr. and Mrs. Jinkins were anxious that their children learn thevalue of work and of an education.  They all had chores on the farm andtheir father steered them toward an interest in learning by reading tothem and talking to them.      Pat Jinkins was listed as a Worshipful Master  at the Matador LodgeNo, 824 AF and Am.] * 1865 - Sept. 24 - B.
